How to get to Sausage Tree SAFARI CAMP:


FLYING TO

Hoedspruit Airport is our local airport and is approx. 45 minutes driving time to Sausage Tree. KMIA (Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport) is also an option however it is usually a minimum of 2 – 3 hours driving time to the camp.


ROAD TRANSFERS

We can arrange private road transfers to and from these airports listed above for you.

Inter-lodge transfers can be arranged as well should you need to be collected from or dropped off at another lodge within Olifants West Game Reserve.


VEHICLE RENTAL

Renting a vehicle is an economical option with various providers offering rentals from Johannesburg, however the driving time is approx. 5 – 6 hours on average.


ROAD SHUTTLE

There is a road shuttle service which departs daily from OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg and there is also a daily return service departing from Hoedspruit back to Johannesburg.

06h45-07h15 - Depart from Johannesburg OR Tambo Central Bus Terminal

12h45-13h15 - Arrive at Olifants West Nature Reserve gate on the R40


Departure (Hoedspruit to Johannesburg)

11h30-11h45 - Depart from Olifants West Nature Reserve gate on the R40

18h00-18h30 – Arrive Johannesburg OR Tambo Central Bus Terminal


Sausage Tree Camp will collect you from and return you to Olifant’s West Nature Reserve Gate.

 

SELF-DRIVE TIPS FROM JOHANNESBURG

  • The ‘WAZE’ app is can be useful in navigating the routes to Hoedspruit.
  • Please be aware that Toll Fees at Toll Gates are applicable.
  • You can only pay the Toll Fees with cash (South African Rand) or with a South African issued credit card (If your credit card is issued abroad then we suggest drawing some local currency from the airport before departing)


DIRECTIONS FROM JOHANNESBURG (via POLOKWANE)

  • On exiting the airport, follow the signs towards Pretoria - this road becomes the N1.
  • Follow the N1 road all the way to Polokwane.
  • After Polokwane take the R71 East turnoff to Tzaneen.
  • Stay on the R71 and follow the signs to Phalaborwa (for about 50km - after that the sign Gravelotte will appear (do not turn left, continue straight this becomes the R526).
  • After about 42km, you will come to an T-junction - left goes towards Phalaborwa, right towards Hazyview/White River.
  • Keep heading into the direction of Hazyview/White river on the R40 and continue onwards past Mica.
  • After crossing over the Olifants River Bridge, the entry gate for Olifants West Nature Reserve is approx. 10 minutes further on the left.
  • Here you will be given directions to the camp, which will take another 15 minutes.

DIRECTIONS FROM JOHANNESBURG (via DULLSTROOM)

  • On exiting the airport, join the N12 and follow it to Witbank.
  • The N12 joins the N4 which follows onto Belfast/eMakhazeni.
  • At eMakhazeni (Belfast) turn on to the R540 and follow it to Dullstroom and Lydenburg.
  • Pass through Lydenburg (Mashishing) and onto the R36 towards Ohrighstad.
  • In Ohrighstad follow the R527 over the Abel Erasmus pass and through the JG Strydom tunnel towards Hoedspruit.
  • Pass through Hoedspruit town and once you have gone over the railway bridge turn left onto the R40 (R530).
  • After 17km turn right into the Olifants West Nature Reserve gate.
  • Here you will be given directions to the camp.

DIRECTIONS TO SAUSAGE TREE SAFARI CAMP INSIDE THE RESERVE

Please keep in mind you are driving on Private Property – we ask that you please follow our directions, do not use Google Maps as it will take you straight through the bush. 



The speed limit is strictly 30km per hour. Do not exit your vehicle at any point before arriving at the camp.


  • From the Main Gate, follow the road straight along the fence line, which will be on your right side for approximately 10 mins (3.4km). Keep a look out for animals!
  • After the fence has ended, carry on driving until you see the sign for Sable Road and turn LEFT into Sable Road
  • Continue on with Sable Road for approximately 5 minutes until you see the "Sausage Tree Safari Camp" sign on your left and turn there.
  • Follow the access road and the small Sausage Tree signboards until you reach our gate, push the button on your right to open the electric gate.

2024 Conservation Levies

  • R265 per person
  • R110 per vehicle

It is payable at the gate of the Olifants West Nature Reserve.

Conservation Fee

A payment of conservation fees per person and per vehicle is required payable by credit card for the conservation once off entry fee. Please ask the guard for a map of directions to Sausage Tree if not handed over.
